Tony Stark (Mod 9 Spellstorm Thaumaturge)

You built a Control Wizard huh? Well you picked a good class then. The Control Wizard (CW) is one of the most versatile classes in Neverwinter. Here I am going to go over my personal build and why it works for me, not you, me. If you like this and wish to use it as your own, don’t forget where it came from.

I started playing my CW famously named Tony Stark in MOD 5. Picked the Human race because he was just a test, and put my points into the primary stat Intelligence. At the time I did not wright down the initial role but I would imagine that I went with high INT and high CHA so if you’re looking to start fresh go for that.

If you are starting a CW and would like to find the best race for you, I would suggest the following:

Races

  • Human: Personal favorite as it increases Defense by 3% and also gives 3 additional Heroic Feats which I will go over why I enjoy this later.
  • Sun Elf: Great for the CW because of the Stat role and the additional Action Point gain (always important).
  • Tiefling: Again, great Stat role, and gain 5% damage bonus to enemies below 50% health, awesome for DPS.
  • Dragonborn and Ancestry Dragonborn: Primary reason for this would be because the Stat role is 100% up to you, but also being a dragonborn increases damage dealt, I don’t have these races readily available to figure out why they do more damage but they do.

After picking the race you’re given the Stat roles to choose. I would recommend a build that focuses on high INT and high CHA for overall damage output. If given the option of 10 STR 10 CON and 10 DEX or an 8 in either of those, place the 8 on DEX as its essentially useless to CW.

Powers

I have been playing my CW for a while and I have rounded up 80+ Power Points so to be 100% fair I will go to the level 70 range and then list the order to upgrade after 70. These points are for the Spellstorm Paragon path.

At Wills

  • Magic Missile: 3/4
  • Ray of Frost: 3/4
  • Chilling Cloud: 3/4
  • Storm Pillar: 3/4

Encounters

  • Chill Strike: 3/4
  • Conduit of Ice: 3/4
  • Entangling Force: 3/4
  • Repel: 1/4
  • Shield: 3/4
  • Icy Terrain: 3/4
  • Sudden Storm: 3/4
  • Ray of Enfeeblement: 3/4
  • Icy Rays: 2/4
  • Steal Time: 3/4
  • Shard of the Endless Avalanche: 0/4
  • Disintegrate: 3/4
  • Imprisonment: 0/4

Dailys

  • Ice Storm: 2/4
  • Arcane Singularity: 1/4
  • Oppressive Force: 3/4
  • Ice Knife: 3/4
  • Maelstrom of Chaos: 0/4

Personal

  • Orb of Imposition: 2/4
  • Arcane Presence: 0/4
  • Chilling Presence: 3/4
  • Evocation: 0/4
  • Storm Fury: 0/4
  • Storm Spell: 3/4
  • Eye of the Storm: 3/4
  • Arcane Power Field: 0/4
  • Frost Wave: 0/4

Again, these are all the Powers that you should upgrade on your way to 70, if you need to put points into anything to advance it will not break the build and make you worse of a player. everything that is at 3/4 will eventually be upgraded to 4/4 however; the first points to go up to 4/4 should be your Personal features, and as a new LVL 70 I would recomend Eye of the Storm. Once your Crit chance is above or close to 50% then Chilling Presence can go to 4. After the Personals, Daily Powers are next, then Encounters and finally At-Wills.

I play on the Xbox One so my button map is the following:

  • LT: Ray of Frost.
  • RT: Chilling Cloud.
  • RB: Conduit of Ice.
  • X: Icy Terrain.
  • Y: Disintegrate.
  • B: Steal Time.
  • LB+X: Ice Knife.
  • LB+Y: Oppressive Force.

They are all subject to change based on what I am engaged in, Ranged or Up Close, Boss fight or Trash Mobs and the #1 thing to remember is to make any rotation your own, play around with these powers and see what works for you.

Time for the Heroic Feats. I’m not going to tell you what points to place where with the names of every spot… I’m going to just sort it out like it is in the game, but kinda using a matrix sort of pattern.

Heroic Feats.

0 4 3 5

3 0 0 0

2 3 0 0

Most simple way that I can do that for you guys. If by chance you are Human and have an extra 3 points for this, place them under the only 5 in the Prestidigitation.

Paragon Feats.

Since I don’t have many ways to show the end caps, I hope this has proven to be quite useful.

Stronghold

Power

Lifesteal

Revive sickness or Mount speed

Companions

I currently use the Battlerager as the Summoned companion, Replaceable with Young Yeti, Mercenary and Zentharim Warlock.

I am also using the Erinyes of Belial and Air, Earth and Fire Archons.

Mounts

Equipped doesn’t matter of course so the mount bonus I chose if 4k Armor Penetration from an Axe Beak. I will be changing to Crit Strike as soon as I get my armor penetration to a good amount without the Axe Beak.

  • Axe Beak: 4k Armor Pen
  • Imperial Rage Drake: 4k Critical Strike
  • Tensers Floating Disk: Mount Combat Power

Insignia Bonus

  • Shepherd’s Devotion: I use currently because it is bugged and gives Action Points instead of Defense, Deflection, and Movement.
  • Wanderer’s Fortune: 4% extra drop chance, Useful until you have maxed everything at which point I will be switching to something that gives HP on crits or deflects.
  • Survivor’s Blessing: Deflection does not happen often so when it does, healing helps out a lot.
  • Artificer’s Influence: Lesser version of Artificer’s Persuasion but adding more Action Points when using an Artifact.
  • Gladiator’s Guile: Nice to have for bonus speed, I will probably switch to a higher damage output or survival bonus later.

Gear and Equipment

Current Item Level is just shy of 3.3k sitting at 3,295 without an Armor Enchantment.

3 Pieces of Dragonflight: Helmet, Gauntlets, and Boots.

Dusk Raid Chest piece with intent of getting either a shadowclad or a negation enchantment for.

All Armor Reinforced with 200 Power and all Jewelry Reinforced with 100 Action Point Gain.

Twisted Weapons with a Dread Enchantment.

Valindra Set: Shard of Valindra’s Crown, Amulet of Valindra’s Favor, and the Belt of Valindra’s Guard.

Ring of Brutality +4: I use because of 1 offence, 1 defense slots and Power.

Ring of Sudden Precision +4: 1 offence, 1 defense and Crit.

Gemmed Exquisite Elemental Shirt and Pants.

Artifacts

Lantern of Revalation (Active); 1k Crit, 1k Armor Pen, 600 Combat Advantage Bonus. (once maxed)

Sigil of the Controller; 1k Power, 1k Crit, 600 Control Resist. (once maxed)

Final Thoughts

I believe that is everything you could know about my CW Tony Stark. I will be updating with a Mod 10 build once Mod 10 hits Xbox and I will try to include pictures to make things easier. Feel free to like and comment what you think, all feedback helps out a ton!
